The Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr Idiat Adebule, on Monday advised principals and head teachers in both private and public schools in the state to encourage schoolchildren to participate in extracurricular activities to develop their hidden potential.
The deputy governor spoke during the inspection of a callisthenic display by pupils in preparation for the Lagos@50 celebration at the Wahab Folawiyo High School, Ikoyi.
Adebule said, “Engaging students in extracurricular activities gives them the advantage of early exposure to various vocations and sports alongside their educational development. Pupils, who are not academically sound, can be assisted to develop their skills in sports, craft or other vocations that could help them to realise their potential.”
While urging pupils to be hard-working and show commitment to their education, Adebule explained that the government had budgeted a lot of money in 2017 for their educational development.
“The Lagos State Ministry of Education has designed a new curriculum that incorporates extracurricular activities like sports for fun, participating in outdoor activities, informal practices and physical fitness, among others. I urge you to make use of various facilities provided in schools to develop yourselves,” she added.
Adebule stated that the ongoing construction of model colleges across the state was to make the educational system in the state one of the best in the world.
