Kenyan police and opposition supporters have clashed in the city of Kisumu, where burning barricades and gangs of youth prevented voting in some towns as the Presidential re-run kicks off.
Heeding opposition leader, Raila Odinga’s call to boycott the election, youth were seen throwing stones but were met by live rounds, tear gas and water cannon.
“By and large the security situation in the country is OK. Polling stations have been opened in over 90 percent of the country and voting has commenced,” Interior minister Fred Matiang’i told Citizen TV.
The re-run follows an August vote whose result, a Kenyatta victory, was annulled by the Supreme Court due to procedural irregularities.
