Church Crawler’s visit to LifePointe Church was not just a memorable one but one that will remain unforgettable for a quite a while. Afterall, it’s not every day you walk into a church, have a pre-service breakfast and discuss a seemingly sacred topic like homosexuality.
When I discovered that LifePointe was going to be having a discussion come Sunday on the subject of Faith and Same-Sex Attraction, I literally screamed Funke!!! [Well, to myself actually]. Sex is not one of the things we discuss in churches especially in youth churches and on a Sunday when most churches would be having an independence celebration and coupled with the fact that there was going to be breakfast before service begins, I immediately knew I was going to be there.
So, Lifepointe Church is the Young Adult Expression of The Elevation Church, Nigeria, with a mission to be a resting place for the weary and a signpost for the lost. Contrary to popular opinion of what youth churches in Lekki are like – Elitism, Class and Cliques, the atmosphere is warm, real and loving all at the same time. Although The Elevation Church, Nigeria has Pastor Godman Akinlabi as the Lead pastor, Pastor Idris Belo-Osagie leads the LifePointe Church.
The pre-service breakfast time was on point. Being in a church that appreciates orderliness, calmness and maybe just a touch of class is definitely worth being grateful to God for.
The Praise and Worship felt like Heaven; only that we had some members of the audience who made it a point of duty to go off key [Not like I was monitoring but…never mind].
One of the most exciting moments was the session dedicated to God Experience. If you come from any church in Nigeria, you can relate to testimony sessions in a service; the Good, the bad and the ugly. God Experience at The LifePointe Church is your traditional testimony session with a twist. First, nobody is being extra about anything; No one exaggerates about how many times their cars tumbled during an accident. Secondly, the God Experience revolves around the testimony of salvation and nothing more. This in my opinion, should be the real concept of testimony. The moment our attention shifts from that to other material things which people have regardless of their faith in Jesus, we miss the point.
The sermon time came as quickly as I had anticipated and I know others did too. We didn’t come all the way to eat breakfast and enjoy cool music. The message was calm but heart piercing. The type of Jesus on the mountain kind of sermon. The sermon revolved around the can, would and will of a Christian when it comes to Same-Sex attraction and other sexual situations, and the response of a believer to such people which should be nothing short of love. Much more importantly, the church emphasised the need to join support groups and speak up when in need of help.
The service ended on a quite sober note. Moments of reflection and prayers for those having challenges especially with their sexual lives.
Till I attend that church and Church Crawler crawls into your church, better be prepared, “for the hour cometh…”
