Grab a Book: 10 Destinations to Unplug This Fall

There’s something about autumn that makes us want to disconnect from our busy, digital lives. Sandwiched between a busy summer of vacations and the impending holiday season full of family traditions, fall is the perfect time to head to nature to unplug.

We’ve rounded up our 10 favorite getaway destinations that are guaranteed to inspire you to leave your phone at home and recharge.

1. A Getaway House

Boston, New York or Washington D.C.
Sleeps: 2-4
Cost: $114-134/night

Getaway houses are tiny homes built with the sole intention of providing guests with the perfect private vacation. The company offers stays just outside of Boston, New York, and Washington D.C. year round on small plots of secluded land. Despite their size, the homes are modern with large windows and fully functional stove tops and bathrooms. There aren’t many places that are cozier to unplug at than this!

2. Emerald Lake Lodge

Field, BC, Canada
Sleeps: 4
Cost: $90-130/night

British Columbia’s Emerald Lake is part of Canada’s Yoho National Park, an area of BC that was just discovered a century ago by an outdoorsman when he stumbled upon the teal water. The Emerald Lake Lodge was built on its shores with salvaged 1890’s saloon timber and boasts original fireplaces, an outdoor hot tub and 360 degree views of the park. The restaurant and lounge are award-winning – but we wouldn’t judge if you ordered room service and stayed by the fireplace.

3. A Rolling Hut

Winthrop, Washington
Sleeps: 2
Cost: $145/night

Nestled in Washington’s Methow Valley in the North Cascades sit six modular “huts” that offer guests unrivaled views of the mountains. In the surrounding towns you can sign up for yoga, visit a local winery or get outdoors on horseback or on skis. For food, you can either cook in your cabin and dine on a private picnic table outdoors, or walk over to Kelly’s, the onsite restaurant, for local dishes and ingredients.

4. Little St. Simon’s Island

Saint Simons Island, Georgia
Sleeps: 2
Cost: $550/night

If you’re looking for warmer weather for your off-the-grid weekend, The Lodge at Little St. Simon’s Island is a must visit. The cabins sit on a small island off the coast of Georgia with views of sandy beaches, salt marshes and the Atlantic Ocean. Each cabin is unique, and meals are included within your booking rate. Sip coffee in a rocking chair on your own porch in the morning, and cozy up next to your private cabin’s fireplace at night.

5. A Free Spirit Sphere

Vancouver Island, Canada
Sleeps: 2
Cost: $250/night

Perched in the tree tops of Vancouver Island’s coastal rain forest are three spherical tree houses. Guests ascend a network of bridges and staircases to access their own private sphere, each of which includes a small kitchen and shower. In the surrounding Pacific Northwest area visitors can hike miles of trails, explore natural caves and kayak with Orca whales.

6. Camp Wandawega

Elkhorn, Wisconsin
Sleeps: 6
Cost: $600/night

Just two hours north of Chicago is Wandawega Lake and a small camp right out of your childhood dreams. Unique cabins provide a home base for guests to take advantage of Camp Wandawega’s lakefront beach, hiking trails, shuffleboard courts and archery. When they aren’t hosting private retreats, the Wandawega cabins are on Airbnb for anyone to take advantage of. Need a little more convincing? The Camp has their own Manifesto of Low Expectations to support your unplugging!

7. Glen Oaks

Big Sur, California
Sleeps: 2
Cost: $200/night

Big Sur is one of the most beautiful stretches of the Pacific Coast Highway on the California Coast (we even have our own road trip guide). The road winds around the cliffs hundreds of feet above the ocean and gives visitors amazing views of the Pacific Ocean. At Glen Oaks, each cabin has private fire pits and outdoor spaces – and no televisions. Check into the retro-inspired compound and you’re just steps away from some of the prettiest hiking trails in California.

8. The Palmwood

Moloa’a Kauai, HI
Sleeps: 2
Cost: $300/night

On the North Shore of Kauai sits The Palmwood. Although the guest house sits on a sprawling five acres of private land, there are only three guest rooms so you’ll never feel crowded. After checking in, borrow one of the Palmwood’s complimentary bicycles and get outdoors to explore the surrounding areas of coastline, inland hiking trails, and the small local towns nearby.

9. El Cosmico

Marfa, TX
Sleeps: 2
Cost: $200/night

Marfa is the ultimate secluded destination. Tucked away in the West Texas desert, it’s a fusion of culture and seclusion. At El Cosmico you can choose from accommodations such as renovated vintage trailers, safari and scout tents, Sioux-style tepees, a Mongolian yurt, and tent campsites. Grab a book and a hammock on the lawn and enjoy the serenity only West Texas has to offer. See our entire guide to Marfa here.

10. The Sanctuary

Monterey Bay, Marina, CA
Sleeps: 2
Cost: $250/night

If you prefer the coast to the woods, The Sanctuary Beach Resort on California’s northern coast is the perfect place for your digital detox. You’ll sleep just steps away from the beach and a short distance to wineries in Carmel and hiking in Big Sur. Sanctuary partnered with cult-favorite Republic bikes to design Instagram-worthy beach bikes for their guests; complete with a white-washed finish and a basket for you to explore town on.

What are your favorite places to relax and recharge?
