Things to do in Cape Town on Human Rights Day 2017

Human Rights Day 2017

The 21st of March, Human Rights Day, was declared a public holiday in 1994. It serves as both a reminder of the Sharpeville massacre and a celebration of Mzansi’s unique foundation, which gives all citizens equal rights. Here are four activities you can enjoy in and around Cape Town.

1. Get artsy at the National Gallery

On Human Rights Day entry to all the Iziko museums (excluding Groot Constantia Manor House, the Planetarium and the Castle of Good Hope) is free. There is also an exciting cultural programme at the South African National Gallery from 10am to 6pm. For more information, visit Iziko’s website.

COST: Free

2. Cosy up under the stars

Head to Hillcrest Quarry to watch the ’90s classic Fight Club, starring Edward Norton and Brad Pitt, with Galileo Open Air Cinema. Treat yourself to a night out where there will also be artisanal food and drinks on sale. Doors open at 6pm and you can come and reserve your spot and enjoy a night under the stars. Tickets can be bought via Webtickets and range from R79 to R159.

Please note: NO alcohol of any kind will permitted into Hillcrest Quarry and bags will be checked.

COST: Standard entry (R79) to VIP entry (R159)

3. Get active with the Cape Epic

Be one of the thousands of supporters who watch cyclists ride from Meerendal Wine Estate in Durbanville to Val de Vie Estate in Paarl. The race began on Sunday 19 March and ends on Sunday 26 March 2017. So head over to Meerendal or Val de Vie and enjoy the lovely estate while the professional athletes battle it out. More information can be found on the official website

COST: Free

4. Be one with nature and music

Enjoy an afternoon on the slopes of Table Mountain and listen to the contemporary rock sounds of top-selling band Just Jinjer at the Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset Concerts. This is one of the last concerts for this season, so make sure you don’t miss this one on Human Rights Day!

Head to the botanical gardens with your picnic blanket and picnic basket and enjoy all things local. Tickets can be bought on Webtickets and range from R125 to R165

COST: Under-21s (with ID): R125; adults: R165
