If you and your technology aren’t on first-name terms (or you spend half your day sorting out less technologically-minded friends and family), then use our tips to help you simplify any smartphone operating system. Trust us, these hacks will definitely make the phone easier to use…
1. Home screen hacks
On an Android phone you can install a launcher app that simplifies the look of the home screen. We like Wiser (free, Google Play Store), as it uses simple, intuitive icons.
If you have an iPhone, there’s no equivalent app, but you can rearrange how apps appear on the home screen. Just tap and hold the app you want to move until it begins to wobble and has an X in the top left-hand corner, then drag it to a new position on any screen – even the home screen.
2. Delete unused apps
If you don’t use it, delete it. Apps that have been downloaded are easily uninstalled. However, frustratingly, you might find pre-loaded apps are not always deletable.
On an Android smartphone, tap and hold the app you want to remove and press Disable – this will remove the icon from the home screen (this is not possible on apps such as the Calculator or Weather). On older versions of Android, head to the Settings menu, press apps, manage, select the app and press Uninstall.
On an iPhone running iOS 10, any app, even the built-in ones, can be deleted. Again tap and hold the app until it wobbles, then press the X that appears. (In older versions of the operating system it’s not possible to delete built-in apps.) Downloaded apps can also be deleted by pressing and holding until they wobble, then tapping the X.
3. Make the font size bigger
On an Android smartphone, head to Settings and Display. Then select Font Size and choose Large or Extra Large.
On an iPhone, tap the Settings app and select Display and Brightness. Then choose Size and use the slider to adjust the size of the font. You can also make the size of the display slightly larger, too, so the app icons are bigger. Head to the Display and Brightness menu again. From there, select View, then choose Zoomed.
