You might have heard and you might not have heard, but the latest news in Nigeria is that employees of a federal agency – NEMA- has downed tools.
On Thursday, October 19, 2017, employees of National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) embarked on a nationwide indefinite strike.
The employees were directed to embark on the strike by the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria in Abuja over the non-payment of their allowances, among other issues.
At a time like this, we don’t need to start the blame game, all we need to do is to bring an end to this sham.
The director-general of the agency, Mustapha Maihaja has been at daggers, drawn with the staff over the decision of the former to conduct a verification exercise to ascertain the status of staff in the agency, a move the latter has rejected.
Fellow Nigerians, this is why we don’t need to pass blame on anyone as it amounts to time wasting at the expense of innocent Nigerians suffering in various IDP camps in the country but, rather use the no victor, no vanquished option for NEMA employees and its management so, everyone can go back to work.
The timing of this strike has also dropped a bit of bitterness in our mouths. At the moment, IDP’s across various camps in the country are experiencing starvation and poor welfare, as if that is not enough, we just lost twenty-nine Internally displaced persons in Plateau on Monday, October 16, 2017, at Nkiedonwhro village, Bassa Local Government Area, Plateau after a deadly invasion by gunmen.
The victims were part of the over 100 inhabitants of the primary school housing the camp. At the moment, they are currently receiving support from NEMA and other humanitarian organisations.
What this strike means is that they are at the mercy of nobody, these are not even part of the IDP’s at various camps in the North East in their Thousands. As a result, the government needs to solve this national embarrassment in the next possible hours.
The emergency arm of a country is as important as its security arms which means we can’t avoid to sleep while NEMA is on strike.
Everyday, we receive returnees from Libya and other countries, who will attend to them?
The Federal government is enjoined to settle any necessary financial debt it owes employees of the agency for the sake of Nigerians in various IDP camps.
They are refugees in their own land at no fault of theirs. They must not be exposed to danger and pain.
