How the Igbos used football to rule Africa after the civil war – Segun Odegbami


Patrick Olusegun Odegbami, known simply as Segun Odegbami, a retired Nigerian footballer on Monday, October 2nd, 2017, said sports has the power to change Nigeria, adding that it remains a unifying factor in the country.

Speaking at The Platform, held at Covenant Christian Centre, a nation and governance building program, where he spoke on the topic “With Sports we can Nigeria”.

Making reference to the Nigerian civil war, Mr Odegbami said the Igbos could not find another way to edge out of the effects of war but through football – this led to the establishment of Rangers Football Club in 1970.

He added that the club which ruled African football in a few years was more than a football club, but a movement by the Igbo people.

He also said if properly harnessed, sports has the ability to effect change and drive away societal ills like poverty, illiteracy and HIV/AIDS.
