Alter Native Artists Initiative (A.N.A.I) Visual Arts Foundation to launch in Lagos

On the 4th of November, the Alter Native Artist Initiative (A.N.A.I) a non-profit foundation dedicated to the promotion of visual arts endeavours, will open its doors.

Its arts advocacy is practical in nature, taking the form of training, provision of infrastructure, and artists’ residency, whilst also facilitating the creation of new collaborations between creative practitioners and the local community.

The foundation aspires to become a custodian of some longstanding creative and cultural industries and practices in Nigeria.

In doing this, it will bridge the divide between the traditional, contemporary and the experimental, favouring community involvement in a way that encourages learning, empowering the people of the community and making positive contributions to their local economy.

The foundation is situated in the Lekki-Epe axis of Lagos, in a community and environment that provides the tranquillity and space visual artists will require to undertake their work.

ANAI will run a number of initiatives designed to support and promote artists.

These include residencies, training workshops, and professional development programmes for artists. The residencies will invite experienced practitioners to train local creatives on practical skills; support emerging practice by providing facilities to produce new work on a major public platform.

The Foundation will also have an on-site ceramics studio. One of its principal objectives is to revive and develop the art of ceramics to a level compatible with international health and quality standards.

ANAI has available creative workspaces, exhibition spaces and galleries within which artists can be commissioned to create new work and exhibit same to the wider public.

Aminat Agoro, Arts Programme Manager of the foundation said, “Our mission is to create sustainable infrastructure that supports creative practitioners in Nigeria and to empower those actors within our community.”
