5 beauty-product ingredients to avoid when you’re pregnant

beauty

When it comes to makeup and skincare, not all are created equal, and some are safer to use during pregnancy than others. Here are five ingredients to look out for and avoid using when you are expecting a baby.

1. Parabens

These are found in many beauty products such as shampoos, body lotions, face cleansers and foundations, and are potentially harmful because they are capable of copying the effects of oestrogen. This is the hormone that regulates the reproductive system. The UK has even banned the use of parabens in products intended for children, which should be enough to convince moms-to-be to stay away from them, at least for nine months.

2. Retinol (or vitamin A)

Vitamin A is one of the most common ingredients found in anti-ageing products because it prevents the breakdown of collagen. Unfortunately it has also been linked to possible birth defects, so doctors recommend that women avoid it for the duration of their pregnancy. Oral retinoids, such as some oral acne medication, can also be dangerous and are best avoided until the baby is born.

3. Diazolidinyl urea (formaldehyde)

This ingredient is often found in sunscreens and hair-straightening products. Formaldehyde is a highly controversial chemical that is a known carcinogen, making it potentially harmful not just for expectant mothers but for anyone. It won’t appear on the label as formaldehyde, but look out for diazolidinyl urea on the containers of your beauty products. Then put them aside until after the birth, or even forever!

4. BHA and BHT

Commonly found in makeup, moisturisers and even nappy-rash cream, these chemicals have been known to act as hormone disrupters. This is bad news for pregnant women because it could potentially lead to developmental issues in their unborn child. Because pregnant women and infants are so vulnerable, it is advised that you switch to products that contain natural ingredients instead.

5. Ethanolamines

On labels these usually read as MEA, DEA, TEA, triethanolamine or diethanolamine, and have unfortunately been linked to cases of organ-system toxicity. They have even been linked to certain cancers. There is also a study that was conducted that suggests that these chemicals can impact a child’s brain development.

So, for the sake of a healthy pregnancy and happy baby, it might be time to start reading those ingredient lists.
