Still maintaining his unbeaten professional record, Olaide Fijabi is now targeting the continental title after retaining his West Africa light welterweight title against Ben Ankrah of Ghana at the GOtv Boxing Night 12.
The millionaire boxer who was named the second best boxer at the Gotv Boxing Night 12 to be richer by N1m believes the fight against the expereinced Ghanaian had prepared him for the next title bout.
“I must admit that I was surprised with the way my opponent fought in my last bout because I never expected the fight to last for up to 10 rounds. But I had underestiamted him thinking that I will knock him out early into the fight and he stood very strong till the end of the fight. This again has shown me thati should not always target knockout but make sure I fight well. Ghanaian boxers are very strong and this is a good warm-up for me ahead of my continental title in December,” he said.
The 2012 National Sports Festival gold medalist added: “My next target is to become African champion and this I know is another challenge for me. I will have to return to training next week so that I can start early preparation for any opponent that may come my way. I am eager to become African champion in order to compete at global level next year. There is no doubt that it is going to be tough and I am also ready to go tougher on any opponent.”
There are indications that Fijabi may have a rematch against Ghana’s
Raphael Kwabena King for the Africa light welterweight title in December. In their first meeting in Lagos this year, Fijabi overcame the Ghanaian with split decision.
