Rivers: Public Health Director decries open defecation in Port Harcourt

Dr Nnanna Chiyere, Director of Public Health, Rivers’ Ministry of Health, has decried open defecation by some residents of Port Harcourt.

Chiyere told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Port Harcourt on Monday that open defecation was a serious health risk and posed an environmental hazard to the public.

He said that flies could perch on human waste and later settle on food meant for human consumption, adding that flies are vectors of some diseases such as diarrhoea among others.

The director said houses, stalls and shopping malls were expected to be built with toilet facilities.

He added that the provision of toilet facilities among others should be a compulsory condition for the approval of building plan by the relevant ministry.

“How can a landlord build a house or stall without toilet facility? she asked, and described non-provision of such facility as an act of “irresponsibility.”

NAN reports that the former Mile 1 Market/Bayelsa Motor Park, near Isaac Boro Park in Port Harcourt stinks due to indiscriminate urination.

The perimeter fence constructed by the Rivers Government to secure its land by the railroad is an eyesore as residents urinate by the side of the perimeter fence.

The development was due to the demolition of the public toilet constructed in the market that had served the public over the years.

The market and motor park were demolished and the land fenced off without provision of an alternative toilet.
