5 life-changing hacks every woman should know

Together with 1st for Women, we’ve put together 5 DIY life hacks to help you get things done in a timely and unconventional manner. Take a look at the list below and keep these nifty tricks up your sleeve to ensure you’re always ready. Just in case.

DIY Mosquito Repellent
Here’s how to keep mozzies at bay when you’ve run out of mosquito repellent.

  • Combine vodka and sprigs of lavender in a spray bottle.
  • Spray the combination onto your skin for an eco-friendly mosquito repellent with a fresh scent.

Tip: you can also experiment with other essential oils to find your preferred scent.

DIY Toothpaste
Keep your pearly whites squeaky clean, without the use of toothpaste.

  • Combine half a teaspoon of baking soda with a little bit of water to form a paste.
  • Scoop up the paste with your toothbrush and brush as you would normally.

Tip: use lemon juice instead of water when forming the paste for enhanced stain removal.

DIY Vase Cleaner
You know those hard-to-reach spots in vases? This is how to make sure your favourite flower-holding vessel stays clean.

  • The combination of water, a little dishwashing liquid, and some uncooked rice grains will change your life.
  • Simply add all three into the vase and shake!

Tip: you can also use this nifty cleaning hack on juice and smoothie bottles.

DIY Drain Cleaner
Unclog your drain without the use of chemicals.

  • Pour a kettle of boiling water down the drain, add 1 cup of baking soda and let it sit for a few minutes.
  • Next, pour a mixture of 1 cup vinegar and 1 cup boiling water.

Tip: for really problematic drains, repeat this process and combine with the use of a plunger.

DIY Corkscrew
A sigh of relief is in order. Free trapped wine by following the steps below without the use of a corkscrew.

  • Wind ¾ of a screw into the cork.
  • Use the clawed nail-remover side of a hammer to hoist the screw, along with the cork, out of the bottle.

Tip: use a wood or chipboard screw. The wider thread will help prevent damaging the cork.
