Step-by-step: how to make crate shelves for your children’s toys

colourful storage boxes

Create a great space to store your children’s toys with this affordable DIY project. Follow this quick and easy step-by-step video to make your own crate shelves. You’ll never look at crates the same way again!

How to make crate shelves:

What do you need?

1. Four usable wooden crates

2. Sandpaper to sand the crates

3. A paintbrush

4. A stirring spatula

5. Woodoc Water-Borne™ FLOOR Clear and White

6. Woodoc Colours

7 easy steps to make crate shelves:

  1. Find good crates to make the shelves from. When choosing your crates, try to choose the smoothest ones with as few splits and knotholes as possible.
  2. Sand the crates until smooth and remove all splinters. Remove all dust by wiping the surface thoroughly with a soft, dry cloth.
  3. Mix your chosen Woodoc Colours with the Woodoc Water-Borne FLOOR Clear and White, using the stirring spatula. This will give you two shades for each colour. We chose Aquamarine and Mulberry. We now have four gorgeous colours!
  4. Apply the first coat of sealer and allow to dry completely. A light sanding of the surface is recommended at this stage. Wipe clean with a soft, dry cloth. The brushes used may be cleaned immediately after use with water.
  5. Stir the product well and apply the second coat of sealer. Allow to dry completely.
  6. Stir again and apply the third coat of sealer. Allow to dry completely.
  7. Arrange the toys and stuffed animals in your gorgeous crate shelves!

Woodoc Water-Borne FLOOR is a tough and durable modern sealer that is easy to apply and can be used for all indoor wooden floors and indoor wooden stairs. This product is water-, alcohol- and stain-resistant, and is available in Clear/White and Matt/Gloss.

Woodoc Colours are formulated to be added to the Woodoc Sealer of your choice to ensure an easy and controlled application. Woodoc Colours are available in 12 fashion shades and eight wood shades, and can be used on pine furniture, wooden floors, wooden toys, wooden patio furniture, garage doors and gates.
