Yasmine Elder, 24, was sitting in a van with partner Darrius Ellis, in Chicago when they got into an argument.Prosecutors say Elder was able to overpower Mr Ellis, 26, and then pour bleach down his throat.
According to the Chicago Tribune,police later found him unconscious on the ground near the vehicle in the early hours of Monday.He was taken to hospital and pronounced dead at 3.26am, the Chicago Tribune reports.
A post-mortem exam showed Mr Ellis died as a result of a "caustic substance" being "forcibly" applied to his throat.
Elder was was arrested and charged with the murder of Ellis, who was father to a five-year-old son.
