The National University of Singapore (NUS) is Asia’s best University for the second year running, according to rankings released on Thursday by Times Higher Education magazine.
The university beat out China’s Peking University and Tsinghua University to retain top honours.
The ranking compares 300 universities in 24 Asian countries and uses the same indicators as the magazine’s world university rankings, with an additional focus on publications and research and less emphasis on reputation.
NUS, ranked 24th in the world, are a “role model for the entire continent,” Times Higher Education Rankings editor, Phil Baty, said in a statement.
“The university has demonstrated that Asian universities can legitimately challenge the traditional Western elites of the U.S. and the UK,’’ he said.
NUS president and professor, Tan Chor Chuan, said in a statement that the award was a “strong recognition of our Asian and global approach to education and research’’.
The university educates more than 38,000 students across undergraduate and graduate studies, based on statistics released last September.
