MTN South Africa CEO Mteto Nyati has left the company for family-owned South African tech company Altron. He will begin at Altron, per the company's announcement, on July1, 2017.

Godfrey Motsa, who joined MTN from Vodacom last year as vice president of MTN's southern and East Africa operation, will take over from Nyati on March 13 to lead the troubled telecom company's South African arm, QZ Africa reports.

In 2015, a $5.2 billion fine was slammed on MTN in Nigeria - its biggest market - leading to a mass exodus of executives from the Group and Chairman Phuthuma Nhleko having to make a come back to handle hands-on operations as the crisis raged on.
Several executives have since left the company and it posted its first ever annual loss for the first time in its history in 2016 despite the Nigerian fine being cut down to $1.7 billion. Incoming Group CEO Rob Shuter is basically coming in with an entirely new management team.
