CAF Elections Live: Ahmad battles Hayatou for the presidency


CAF Forum on the evolution of African football at the African Union HQ

Pulse Sports bring you minute by minute update on the CAF Elections holding in Ethiopia.

Confederation of African Football (CAF) elections is currently holding at the Africa Union Plenary Hall in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

CAF president, Issa Hayatou who has been in office since 1988 is hoping to remain in office for his eighth term.

In Hayatou’s way is Ahmad Ahmad who is also the president of the Madagascar FA.

Amaju Pinnick

The president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Amaju Pinnick who has publicly backed Ahmad is seeking election into CAF Football Executive Committee board to displace the incumbent and long standing member Anjorin Moucharafou who is also the head of Benin Republic Football Federation.

Pinnick is accompanied by NFF senior vice president Seyi Akinwunmi and the General Secretary, Sanusi Mohammed.

Hayatou gave out CAF Order of Merit Mostafa Bedir of Morocco, Mark Gleeson of South Africa and Joseph Gabio, Abel Mabenge, Hassan Hamdy , Mr. Abennet Gebre Meskel

Opening Speech

CAF President Issa Hayatou opened the 39th Ordinary General Assembly with a speech. These are some of the quotes from his speech.

 

"African football is developing at great rates, and we strive for more on all levels. Results of the African youth confirms the dominance and superiority of the continent which must be continued.

"We must increase the number of African teams in @FIFAcom tournaments. Our results confirm that we deserve it.We have supported club competitions which reached great heights, and we organize the CHAN to support the local scene.

"The future of African football must be decided by Africans

"We have had no explanation on why @FIFAcom reduced their offices in Africa. The funds allocated to dev't projects are the same for all the member associations of FIFA, regardless of the continent ."

As delegates arrive at the 39th CAF General Assembly where the elections will hold, Hayatou and FIFA President Gianni Infantino rode in the same car as they left the magnificent Sheraton Hotel, Addis Ababa to the Africa Union Plenary Hall in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Executive Committee Meeting

An Executive Committee meeting held on Wednesday, March 15 where the following resolutions were made.

Total CHAN Kenya 2018

 

Significant progress has been made on the ground and there is a strong government commitment to host the competition and make it a success. This comes after the inspection mission to Kenya from February 20 to 24, led by CAF First Vice President, Suketu Patel. The inspection team visited the various sites, including Nairobi, with two stadiums, Eldoret, Meru and Machakos.

Total U-17 AFCON Gabon 2017

The proposal of the Local Organizing Committee to have Franceville and Port-Gentil as venues for the competition was confirmed, with the tournament taking place from 14 to 28 May 2017.

Total U-20 AFCON Zambia 2017

 

The CAF Executive Committee decided to send a letter of congratulations to the Zambian government authorities and the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) for the excellent organization of the competition which was a success on all levels.

Women's Tournaments

The qualifiers schedule for the 11th edition of the Total Women's AFCON, Ghana 2018, was adopted. The preliminaries will begin on 26 February 2018.

In accordance with the international harmonised calendar for women's competitions, the final tournament will take place from 17 November to 1 December 2018.

The calendars of the African Zone qualifiers for the U-20 and U-17 Women's World Cups were also adopted

Recommendation was made to the CAF Secretariat to proceed with the opening of nominations in order to select the host country for the 2020 edition of the Total Women's Africa Cup of Nations.

In addition, the CAF Executive Committee unanimously recommended the CAF Disciplinary Board to proceed with the case of COSAFA President, also President of the Federation of Zimbabwe, Mr. Philip Chiyangwa who has multiplied actions and statements recently that appears to attack the honour of the CAF, its president and the members of the Executive Committee.

On the proceedings in Egypt, concerning the contract between CAF and Lagardère Sports for the marketing of the media and marketing rights of certain CAF competitions, the CAF Executive Committee invited the CAF General Secretary to continue the ongoing legal proceedings and reiterated that everything has been done in compliance with the statutes of the CAF, laws and regulations in this matter.
