SA’s favourite tart
Milk tart is a nostalgic taste for many South Africans and is one of the most enduring symbols of our baking tradition. There really is a milk tart to suit every taste and occasion – whether it’s one with a home-made puff-pastry collar, crumblier shortcrust pastry, cereal crumbs or no crust at all. It can be flavoured with cinnamon, naartjie peel, peach leaves, nutmeg or vanilla pods, or even almond extract, caramel, citrus zest or cardamom.
Some even come with a little rum or brandy kick! Over the years milk tart has taken a variety of forms – these days you can enjoy it as a tart (baked or unbaked), a dessert, a smoothie, a shooter, a milkshake or a filling for other treats such as doughnuts and pancakes.
This popular treat is so well liked that it even has its own dedicated South African National Milk Tart Day on 27 February.
Need some baking inspiration? Then look no further than The South African Milk Tart Collection (R280*, Human & Rousseau). It’s the sixth offering by the sibling duo Callie Maritz and Mari-Louis Guy. (Their recently launched One Pot/Pan/Tray is a must-have for any home cook!) The duo are also widely known for their exceptional styling and Mari-Louis is one of the judges for the TV series Koekedoor on kykNET.
