"Suicide Squad": Mel Gibson is in talks to direct sequel

Mel Gibson.

Mel Gibson, whose "Hacksaw Ridge" is nominated for six Oscars, may helm the upcoming "Suicide Squad."

61-year-old two-time Oscar winner Mel Gibson is currently in talks to direct "Suicide Squad" sequel.

According to several reports, Warner Bros. is in talks with the filmmaker to take over from David Ayer, who directed the first film, which was met with mixed reviews.

The "Suicide Squad" sequel news comes after reports that Gibson is confirmed to join Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg in "Daddy's Home" sequel.

Gibson had once described "Batman vs Superman" as a "piece of s–t.”

"I’m not interested in the stuff. Do you know what the difference between real superheroes and comic-book superheroes is? Real superheroes didn’t wear spandex. So I don’t know. Spandex must cost a lot," Gibson said to Deadline at the Venice Film Festival.

The first "Suicide Squad" movie was directed by David Ayer, and stars Will Smith as Deadshot,  Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and Jared Leto as The Joker.

It also stars  Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flagg, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, Karen Fukuhara as Katana, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc, Jay Hernandez as El DIablo, Adam Beach as Slipknot, Common as Black Manta and Alex Meraz.

The first "Suicide Squad" movie grossed $746m worldwide.
