It has been a long time since beloved host Regis Philbin left his longtime role as cohost of Live with Regis and Kelly, but he revealed that Kelly Ripa hasn’t spoken to him since.
The 85-year-old spoke with Larry King about his broken friendship with Ripa during an interview on Larry King Now on Tuesday, February 14. After King asked Philbin if he and Ripa still kept in touch, Philbin bluntly responded, “Not really, no.”
He then added that despite hosting the show for 28 years, “Never once did they ask me to go back,” and also expanded on why he and his former cohost no longer speak. “She got very offended when I left. She though I was leaving because of her. I was leaving because I was getting older, and it wasn’t right for me anymore,” he said of his retirement in 2011 after 10 years of co-hosting with Ripa.
King then asked Philbin if Ripa took “took it personal” and he responded, “Yeah, I think so.” As for the possibility of returning to being a talk-show host, he said, “I don’t know. How often it would be? Would it be every night? Every day? I do miss it. There are times when I really miss it, and wish I’d never stopped. But, you know, I just figured it was time to let go.”
