Perfecta Ekpo: Emerging singer talks to Pulse on her growing music career

Perfecta Ekpo

Perfecta Ekpo is a native of Akwa Ibom who discovered her musical talent at a young age, and building on it to fulfil her dreams.

Emerging singer Perfecta Ekpo is gradually warming up her way into the consciousness of music listeners and rightly so her targeted audience

She chats with Pulse Music on her music discovery journey, upward music career trajectory, intentions, collaborations with established artistes and more.

When did you start to pick up with music?

I've been in the performing arts at a very young age, it started with dancing and then singing from the age of 16. I started singing back up for major live bands and later on doing jingles for advertisement, and also voice support in studios on various singles. Then four years ago I composed a song in my dialect titled ‘Annang Mma’ for my state Akwa Ibom, and as they say, the rest is history.

At what point did you realize this was more than just a hobby or a passion?

I've always known i can sing but I never thought of doing it on this level , it took my wonderful hubby Peter who is also my manager and believes in me more than I did to convince me that I can do this, “it's in you.”

How would you describe your music to people who haven’t heard you before?

I call the kind of music I do Afro Pop, it's full of African rhythm that makes you wanna move.

Who are your music influences?

Growing up, I listened to Miriam Makeba gets me, I like the late Brenda Fassie too but nowadays, I’m a fan of Naija's own Yemi Alade and Tiwa Savage, they rock.

What one advice has helped you thus far?

The support of my family is paramount in what I’m doing, I wouldn't be doing this without the unyielding support my hubby Peter gives me. His advice is you have it in you, i have faith in God he said but i also have faith in you, you can do this he tells me. So my advice is find someone who will not only support what you are doing , but also believes in you, it goes a long way.

What do you hope people take away on listening to your music?

When i sing i make sure am having fun doing it ,so the goal for me is some how manage to share that fun with my listeners, if i achieved half of that then am fulfilled .

What projects are you currently working on?

Currently I just finished a collaboration with Timaya titled ‘Go Low’ which will drop end of January 2017. The next stop is a single featuring Skales titled ‘Sweat’, then another single titled ‘Happy’. Also, I intend to drop an album before the year ends.

Parting shots

Thanks to all my fans and well-wishers, your support keeps me going , believe in yourself in everything you are doing and God will do the rest, love you all.
