KFC: Fast food franchise reportedly shuts down as recession bites hard

KFC outlets in Lagos might be shutting down

There are unconfirmed reports that KFC plans on pulling out of the Nigerian market.

There are unconfirmed rumours that popular American fast food restaurant chain Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) plans on shutting down its Lagos outlets.

This rumour started over the weekend on Twitter and today, Monday, February 20, 2017, some websites have published the story.

KFC has yet to react the reports but there are claims that the Lagos outlets are being closed down because of low patronage and a high cost of operation.

Not all KFC outlets will be closed if the reports are anything to go by. The outlets of the fast food chain located in malls will not be closed.

While the economic recession would be to blame for KFC partially shutting down, it seems the business model might be more to blame.

For a global brand like KFC, it is odd that its Twitter and Facebook accounts were last updated in 2014. Also, the official website of KFC Nigeria no longer exists. All these might indicate KFC are ready to pull out of Nigeria for whatever the reason may be.

Ironically, Dominos Pizza is opening up more branches in Lagos. Within the last 8 months, Dominos Pizza has gone on an aggressive expansion spree. Is it not feeling the recession too? Maybe they have a better business model.

KFC opened its first outlet in Nigeria on Monday, December 19, 2009 at City Mall, Onikan, Lagos. In 2010, it announced plans to open up 20 more outlets in 2011.
