INEC to overhaul Rivers state office ahead of Nov 18 gov poll

By Omeiza Ajayi

ABUJA—The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has fixed Saturday November 18 for  Anambra  governorship election.

INEC’s National Commissioner in charge of Information, Publicity and Voter Education, Prince Solomon Soyebi announced this at a press conference yesterday night in Abuja.

While the notice of election would be published on July 21, campaigns by political parties would commence on August 18.

The tenure of the Governor of Anambra state expires on March 16, 2018. By the provisions of the electoral act, the earliest date for election into the office is October 18, 2017 and the latest is February 14, 2018.

…to overhaul Rivers office, sanction 28 Staff

According to Soyebi, INEC is also set “to carry out a total and major overhaul of its state office in Rivers”.

He said the resolution was reached after hours of meeting to consider the report of its administrative panel on the Rivers rerun.

The commission will also sanction 25 staff who are already slated to face criminal prosecution by the police.

In addition, Soyebi said the commission’s three other officials would be made to face administrative sanctions.

While INEC singled some adhoc staff and security operatives for commendation, the commission said it would grant automatic employment to two members of the National Youth Service Corps NYSC, scheme for their exemplary conduct during the Rivers rerun.
