The prosecution said that investigation into the matter was still ongoing, and asked the court for another date for mention.
A Makurdi Magistrates’ Court on Friday remanded four accused persons in prison for alleged criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide.
The accused persons, all from Unwaba Eokpa Village, Otukpo Local Government Area, were Monday Paul, Samuel Sunday, Enokela Samuel and Alechenu Agbo.
There pleas were not taken.
The Prosecutor, Sgt. Joel Yerima, told the court that the case was transferred from Divisional Police Headquarters Otukpo to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Makurdi,on Feb. 6.
Yerima said that Sunday Ugbaha of Unwaba Eokpa Village, with one other reported the incident at Police Station Otukpo on Jan. 28.
“The complainants stated that the accused persons with others who are now at large, got hold of his cousin, Paul Okewu, 25, and beat him seriously for allegedly stealing some tubers of yams."
“And as a result of the beating, the victim died instantly from injuries sustained."
“During police investigations the accused persons were arrested for committing the crime and Alechenu Agbo voluntarily confessed to the crime,’’ he said.
The prosecution said that investigation into the matter was still ongoing, and asked the court for another date for mention.
He said the offence contravened sections 97 and 222 of Penal Code of Benue State, 2004.
The Magistrate, Mrs Ajuma Igama, adjourned the case till March 24 for further mention.
