Hugo Broos: Cameroon AFCON 2017 winning coach applies for Bafana Bafana job

Hugo Broos

Broos who was appointed coach of Cameron in February 2016 wants to be manager of South Africa.

Just less than a month after winning the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations title, Cameroon coach Hugo Broos has applied for the vacant coach of Bafana Bafana of South Africa.

Broos led the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon to their fifth AFCON title beating Egypt 2-1 in the final on Sunday, February 5.

The Belgian who was appointed coach of Cameron in February 2016 has decided to apply for the vacant managerial position of the Bafana Bafana of South Africa.

His representative from Gino Laureyssen from Ligi Star Management revealed that Broos has sent his application to the South African Football Association (SAFA) but has not received any feedback.

“I asked him [Broos] if he wants to be a candidate for SAFA because they are looking for a head coach. So this week we have sent his CV to the CEO of SAFA, but until now we didn’t get any answer, which I think is a little [unusual],’ Laureyssen told True Africa.

He’s very interested in working with a young group and I think the South African national team hasn’t done well in recent years, and if you see how he did with Cameroon, with not only stars but players who want to fight and work hard, I think that [his interest] is a good sign.

The Bafana Bafana of South Africa are without a coach since December 2016 when Ephraim 'Shakes' Mashaba was fired for misconduct.

According to SAFA, other applicants for the job include Roberto Mancini, Giovanni Trapattoni, Hassan Shihata, Samson Siasia, Lothar Mattheus and Bernd Schuster.

The Cameroon FA are yet to react to the development.

Broos will face the Super Eagles of Nigeria with either Cameroon or South Africa.

With Cameroon, the Broos will lead Cameroon to Nigeria in August 2017 for a 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers before they host in the return leg a few days later.

Cameroon are second in Group of the World Cup qualifiers with two points below Nigeria who are first with six points.

Zambia and Algeria are bottom with just a point.

If Broos gets the South Africa job, he will also face Nigeria for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in June 2017.

South Africa and Nigeria are both in Group E with Libya and Seychelles.
