The EFCC might be battling corruption but it has taken time out to make Nigerians laugh.
Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is in the serious business of recovering stolen public funds from public officials.
On Friday, February 10, 2017, the EFCC recovered separate sums of $9,772,800 and £74,000 from former Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Andrew Yakubu.
As commendable as this Narcos-esque move was, the recovery of this stolen money is not the reason why some Nigerians are laughing at the EFCC.
The EFCC opened its Twitter account in January 2013 but it is not till recently that the enforcement agency started making its mark on the micro-blogging site.
The EFCC Twitter account is in the business of throwing bants and trolling. The change in approach from the EFCC started when the Ponzi scheme MMM froze.
Some agitated Nigerians tweeted at the EFCC to help Nigerians recover their investment but the enforcement agency tweeted bants in response.
When someone asked EFCC on which illegal venture he should go into, Internet fraud or Ponzi schemes, the reply was "Would you like to visit any of our offices so we can further discuss your options?"
This epic reply went viral and people started paying attention to the EFCC account. It hasn't disappointed as it has churned out more savage and hilarious replies.
Whoever is behind this Twitter account not only has a funny sense of humour but is very sarcastic as well. EFCC doesn't hold back as it touches on everything from football to music.
The EFCC Twitter account is popular although some are not impressed that the law enforcement agency is involved in bants on the timeline.
"EFCC bants on twitter can't cover for the fact that it's a selective partisan group doing the president's bidding. Stop being too soft" tweeted @harrisonpedro.
Another tweet described the EFCC as unprofessional because of its unconventional Twitter account.
Whatever the case maybe, the EFCC Twitter account is popular. Even with the bants, the agency updates its followers regularly on anti-corruption stories.
Whether you like it or not, the EFCC is engaging Nigerians with humour as it is engaged in the anti-corruption war.
