The woman who reported the case to Due Process Advocates (DPA), a human rights advocacy group, said her husband who has been in the habit of brutalizing her, went to the extreme this time around and she has been unable to get justice because he is a close friend to the DPO of the station handling the case.
However, the DPA has taken up the case and according to the director of the group, Barr. Emeka Ugwuonye, the savage husband would soon be taken to court after the case was transferred to an officer higher than the DPO and the man was made to sign an undertaking not to batter his wife again.
"DPA initiated a protest to get the police to investigate the case of a woman who was seriously battered by her husband. Our protest was directed at the DPO, known as Mr. Bulus.
As for the future of the gruesome attack on the woman, I have urged the police to charge the man to court. However, we are going to see if there are conditions that would warrant us to persuade the woman not to press charges.
This is a marriage that should have worked. The man and his wife are from the same local government in Imo State. They are both educated (the man has a Masters degree and the woman has a Bachelors degree in educational institutions within their state).
With a police undertaking, the man will probably not beat his wife again. The DPO was shaken by DPA protest on Monday and he would not want anything like that again. So, though the DPO and the man are very good friends, the DPO realized that the situation was far beyond him and the man.
Once we are satisfied that the situation has calmed down and that the woman and her children are safe, we will have no further role to play in the matter."
