If your makeup tends to become dry and flaky by lunchtime, a makeup-setting spray may be your saviour. Strapped for cash? You can easily make your own.
What is a makeup-setting spray?
A makeup-setting spray is a fine mist usually containing water, glycerine and/or alcohol. The product can be further infused with ingredients such as botanical extracts, essential oils or a fragrance. Some products also claim to be enriched with vitamins and minerals to benefit the skin.
These products are designed to set makeup. While a setting spray can be a game-changer for your makeup, it can often be expensive and contain ingredients that aren’t that good for your skin, such as alcohol.
Why can a makeup-setting spray benefit me?
If you tend to have drier skin, setting your makeup in place with a setting powder isn’t always the best idea, as a dry powder product tends to feel ‘cakey’ on the skin and can crease in fine lines.
The staying power of makeup can be affected by various things such as sweat, humidity and touching your face. A setting spray provides a boost of moisture, but also contains ingredients (mostly glycerine) to keep your makeup in place while retaining moisture.
DIY makeup-setting spray
Here’s an easy recipe to make your own makeup-setting spray.
You will need:
- 1/4 cup of fresh, distilled water
- 1/2 tbsp vegetable glycerine (you can buy this at pharmacies)
- 6 drops of an essential or facial oil of your choice (try tea-tree oil for oily skin, or rose oil for dry skin)
Directions:
- Add all the ingredients to a clean spray bottle and shake well.
- Use after applying your makeup or during the day as desired.
- Hold the bottle 20cm away from your face and spritz one to three times.
Disclaimer: Not all DIY skincare tips are beneficial to everyone. As with any DIY recipes for skincare, it’s important to note that some ingredients may be skin irritants. Always do a patch test if you are unsure of an ingredient’s reaction to the skin.
