In his words when fellow journalists visited him at the hospital, Thomas said:
“I have expended over N450, 000 so far on my treatment. The medical bill is a daily routine here in Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH, Ikeja.
I am suffering from severe Ulcer, appendix and ruptured intestine. I had my first stage which lasted for four hours and 30 minutes. I am still under close observation and random tests.
I am kindly reaching out to the Lagos State Government, NUJ, NGE, and Nigerians to urgently help me so I may pay my medical bills because I have been unable to do my journalism job due to my health challenges."
A medical surgeon in Chicago, Dr. Clem Scott, who spoke with concerned friends of the veteran journalist, said that Gastrointestinal perforation (GP), a situation that occurs when a hole forms all the way through the stomach, large bowel, or small intestine, can be treated though the surgery but can be very dangerous if not treated on time.
“If your GI tract is perforated, the contents may spill into your abdomen and cause peritonitis, an infection. Such an infection can lead to sepsis.
Sometimes called blood poisoning by members of the general public, sepsis is the body’s often deadly response to infection or injury.
