Claudio Ranieri: How coach’s sack will affect Nigerian players at Leicester City

Wilfred Ndidi and Ahmed Musa

Two Nigerian players, Musa and Ndidi will be affected with the sacking of Leicester City coach, Claudio Ranieri.

It is no longer news that Leicester City have sacked their Premier League winning manager Claudio Ranieri just nine months after he led them to their first league title win in their history.

Although no Nigerian player were part of his Premier League-winning squad, Ranieri signed two Nigeria internationals to bolster his squad.

Ahmed Musa

The Italian manager first signed Musa from CSKA Moscow for a then club record of £16.6m in July 2016.

Musa was signed to bring more pace and width to an already fast Leicester City forward.

Leicester City swept all in their path to the title in 2016 with a swift counter attacking style of play and Musa was signed to make it even faster.

With just four goals in 29 appearances, Musa has been just disappointing for Leicester City.

The 24-year-old has failed to influence games along with Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez who have been shadows of their last season form.

What happens with a new coach?

With a new coach, Musa would have to really impress in training and his first few games or he will be dropped. No matter what happens with their Premier League status, Musa could be the first name on Leicester City summer transfer list as they look to revamp the squad.

A move back to CSKA Moscow or one of these Chinese clubs would be on the cards for Musa if he leaves Leicester City.

Wilfred Ndidi

Ndidi joined Leicester City in the January transfer window in a £15m deal from Belgian side, Genk.

The 20-year-old was primarily as a replacement for N'Golo Kante who left for Chelsea last summer after winning the Premier League title.

Nampalys Mendy who was signed from Nice to replace Kante has barely played because of injury prompting Ranieri to splash the cash on Ndidi.

Although results have not improved, Ndidi has been very impressive for Leicester City, doing his part by screening the defence as best as he can and bombing forward to help out in the attack. His passing has been top notch too as he has attracted the praises of respected pundits.

I can’t fault his (Ndidi) performance, he was very big in the game. He made Pogba a passenger in the middle,” Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville said after Leicester City’s 3-0 home loss to Manchester United Sunday, February, 5.

The boy is good in tackles and he is not afraid of running with the ball either,” Neville added.

Despite being on the losing side in that game, the midfielder was named Man of the Match by BBC Radio Live anchor, Matt Elliot.

What happens with a new coach?

With a new coach, Ndidi’s spot at Leicester City is secured as he has been one of their best players this season.

Ndidi is certain to leave Leicester only if they get relegated at the end of the season.

With his impressive performances so far, the midfielder has caught the eye and will certainly get offers from Premier League clubs.
