The police on Friday arrested 55 doctors, nurses, and other staffers at a Naples public hospital for being clock-in cheats.
One of the suspects worked as a chef and another went to play tennis while claiming to be on duty at the central Loreto Mare hospital, investigators told reporters at a press conference.
Hidden cameras, wiretaps, and surveillance revealed that the errant doctors, nurses, and radiologists dodged the clock by having one among them sign them in, with one suspect known to have swiped 490 badges over the course of a few months, prosecutors said.
The suspects defrauded public coffers of an estimated 800,000 euros (almost 850,000 dollars) over the course of five years, investigators said.
