5 tips for decorating a rented home

rented

Some landlords can be very strict when it comes to what you are and aren’t allowed to change. Any permanent changes (like removing the carpet or driving nails into the walls) are usually no-nos. But with a little creative thinking you can prettify your rented space while also keeping your landlord happy. And it doesn’t have to cost a fortune! So you know more or less what you can’t do, but here’s what you can do:

1. Put down loose rugs

Okay, so you’re not allowed to remove that retro wall-to-wall carpet, but you can cover it with the biggest loose rug you can find. Visit www.airloom.co.za or www.mrphome.com for some great options that will suit both your needs and your budget.

2. Paint your furniture

Painting the walls of a rented home is usually a no-go, but you can paint your furniture for an equally impressive change (and possibly at a fraction of the price). Pinterest is your best friend when it comes to DIY inspiration. Try searching the phrases ‘DIY painted furniture’, ‘dipped paint furniture’ or ‘spray paint furniture’.

3. Pretty it up with house plants

Yes, you can add a personal touch to a rented property without affecting your lease. Indoor plants are a quick and easy way to spruce up any room. Larger plants can also be used to partially cover unattractive walls or to draw the focus away from hideous bathroom tiles. Be sure to choose the right greenery for your space and style. Read our tips on how NOT to kill your house plants.

4. Change the lights

With so many different styles of lampshades and bulbs, you can improve the look and feel of a room without breaking the bank – or doing any permanent damage. Invest in light fixtures of your choice and remember to keep the current ones, as you might want to take your new fixtures with you when you move out. In the mood for some DIY? Create your very own custom lampshade.

5. Deck the walls!

So paint and wallpaper are out when it comes to sprucing up a rental’s interior, but you can customise the walls with vinyl art. Removable stickers are another damage-free way of decorating your space – mywalltattoos.com is one of our favourite suppliers of wall decals and vinyl wall art.

Have fun making your rented space your own!
