3 things you didn’t know you could do on WhatsApp

whatsapp

The messaging service WhatsApp is a must-have app for smartphone users. It lets you send messages, pictures, videos and even voice recordings to other smartphones. Even better – because it sends over the internet instead of using your mobile network, it can save you money. But while you probably know how to use the basic functions in WhatsApp, we bet you didn’t know about these three handy new features that are available on the iPhone version of the app.

1. Get messages ready to send when offline

In the same way as Apple’s iMessage works, WhatsApp will now let you draft and send a message when you have no internet access. It will be queued ready to send when you connect to the internet again. Until now, you’d been able to draft the message, but if you pressed the send button nothing would happen. The feature has been able to do this in the Android version of the app for some time but it’s now come to iPhones, too.

2. Send up to 30 pictures in one go

Previously, you’ve only been able to send up to 10 pictures or videos in any one go but now you can attach 30 at one time.

3. Free up space more easily

You can now see a breakdown of each of your chats on WhatsApp and the storage space they’re taking up on your smartphone – split into categories such a pictures, videos, voice messages, etc. Open the Settings menu from the bottom right-hand corner of the screen, then press ‘Data’ and ‘Storage Usage’ followed by ‘Storage Usage’. If you need to free up space, tap on a conversation (listed by the contacts name) and press ‘Clear Chat’. Now choose what to delete from the conversation, e.g. just the pictures or the pictures and the text. Press ‘Clear’ and the items will be deleted, freeing up the space. To do this, you’ll need to update to version 2.17.1 of WhatsApp: open the App Store and then tap the Updates button on the bottom right-hand side of the screen and tap Update.
