Most of us would like to stay 25 forever, at least in the looks department. The anti-ageing industry is worth billions, which just goes to show that people are spending lots of money on products to help fight off, or at least delay, the signs of ageing.

But applying expensive creams and having chemical peels will only get you so far, because what we put into our bodies is just as important as how we treat the outside when it comes to maintaining a youthful glow. Here are four things things that will make you age faster, both inside and out.

Alcohol

Most people enjoy the occasional tipple, but if you consume alcohol too frequently, it can be ageing. This is because of a number of factors. First, it is damaging to the liver, which can affect your appearance as well as take years off your life.

Second, it is a notoriously dehydrating substance, which is bad news for skin, because as we get older we need as much moisture as possible to keep our skin supple. Finally, it can have a negative effect on the quality of our sleep, which brings us to the next point…

Lack of sleep

As the saying goes, we all need our beauty sleep, and there is a lot of truth to that. While we are sleeping, our cells get to work regenerating, while simultaneously shedding dead skin cells. During the night the moisture level in our skin is also restored to normal after a day of stress and environmental factors, so getting in as many hours of slumber as possible is crucial in order to look youthful and refreshed.

Stress

Most of us have to deal with stress on a daily basis. In moderation, this is not a bad thing, but living in a constant state of frenetic anxiety can be toxic. This is because cortisol, the hormone produced when we are stressed, is chronically high, it can impair sleep, increase blood-sugar levels, cause weight gain and make the body take longer to heal.

Energy drinks

When you’re feeling rundown it might be tempting to reach for an energy drink to get you through the day, but these sugar- and caffeine-laden drinks are really ageing. The sugar and sweeteners can damage cellular proteins, which can make your skin age at an accelerated rate.

So while you might think you are doing yourself a favour, at least in the short term, an energy-drinking habit can negatively impact your skin and health.
