Just like our skin, our hair changes as we get older – and not just because it turns grey.
We spoke to Christel Lundqvist, Founder & Director of STIL Salon – situated in infamous Nottinghill, London, to find out what every woman over 40 should know about her hair.
1. There are plenty of options when it comes to colouring hair
Many people assume they have two choices once their hair starts to turn grey: either to accept their new hair colour or start using permanent dye to cover it.
In fact, says Christel, there are other hair colouring methods to consider.
‘The number-one concern among my 40-plus clients is the regrowth of greys, which they feel looks too harsh and obvious,’ says Christel. ‘For softer regrowth, consider different colour techniques or products.
‘For example, if you have all-over colour, you can break it up with delicate hues and lighter baby strands, which means regrowth will be much less obvious.
‘Alternatively, you could opt for a demi-permanent hair colour (which lasts longer than semi-permanent). This doesn’t offer full coverage like permanent colour does, however, it will cover all the greys.
‘It works to compliment the natural grey tones in the hair and blends easily for a softer finish, giving a more natural look overall.’

2. Your hair’s texture will change as you get older
‘Hair structure and texture change as you get older; as we age, hair is prone to loosing vital moisture, which can lead to it feeling dry, brittle and lacklustre,’ says Christel.
Products such as hair oils and masks are great for combatting dehydration in the hair – we love Moroccanoil Treatment (R459) and Wella Professional SP Hydrate Mask (R369).
3. The is no age limit to long hair
The Duchess of Cambridge’s recent hair chop led to some speculation that ‘girly’ long hair was no longer suitable for 35-year-old Kate.
However, Christel dispels the myth that long hair looks silly or ageing on someone over 40. ‘There is no age limit to fashion these days and cutting your hair doesn’t necessarily make you look younger,’ says Christel.
‘However, if you want to cut your hair short for a fashion statement and worry you might be too old, I would say definitely go for it in your 40s!’ she adds.

4. Consider your hair care
Just as your hair changes as you get older, so your hair care should reflect this.
For example, if you notice hair is thinner or more limp – particularly after the menopause – according to Christel there are some ‘great shampoos and scalp treatments which stimulate blood flow and enhance thickness’. Viviscal and The Cosmetic Republic are among the most popular choices.
‘Rosemary oil is also great for thinning hair – just apply to the scalp and massage in,’ adds Christel.
Others may find their hair feels more coarse or loses it’s shine as they reach middle age, and again, aftercare products are key. ‘Hair can still look super fresh at 40 and beyond if you have a great home care regime,’ confirms Christel.
